Within the context of the three »Silver Lining« exhibitions at Pforzheim’s Jewellery Museum, the extraordinary long-term art project ONE MILLION by Berlin-based Austrian artist Uli Aigner is being presented. From International Museum Day, Sunday 17 May, she will be exhibiting a specially designed installation for this global project. »The arrangement is perfectly tailored to the on-site premises and complements the exhibits of the 21^st International Silver Triennial wonderfully,« says museum director Friederike Zobel. »Furthermore, ONE MILLION ties in thematically almost seamlessly with our previous exhibition ›Dinner Is Served – A Culinary Trip around the World‹.«

ONE MILLION is a multi-generational art project involving the creation of a total of one million handcrafted and personalised pieces of porcelain dishes. Each individual item is thrown on the potter’s wheel by Uli Aigner herself, numbered, signed and then allocated to a person, an institution or an organisation, or to a specific location in the world. The porcelain dishes are not merely objects, but carriers of stories: their respective locations are documented, creating a growing global network that links art, everyday life and human connections across all walks of life.

In doing so, Uli Aigner combines the oldest craft techniques with the latest possibilities of digitalisation, whilst already factoring in collaboration with artificial intelligence: in the future, virtual hands will take over the work and carry the project forward beyond the artist’s lifetime

With this approach, Aigner pursues a goal that is as poetic as it is conceptual. It addresses questions of belonging, value, globalisation and individual existence within a larger whole. The dish – an everyday object – thus becomes a symbol of exchange, presence and memory. Commenting on the idea behind her project, the artist says: »It is important to me that places and people all over the world are included without hierarchy – that every single dish becomes part of a global order that makes connections visible which otherwise often remain invisible.« Porcelain is a storage medium, a political material.

With the presentation of ONE MILLION, the Jewellery Museum offers not only a glimpse into an extraordinary work of contemporary art, but also into the unifying power of creative practice across cultural and geographical boundaries.
