Hip Hop – a Statement?

Originating in the USA, the hip hop culture is a phenomenon that has spread all over the world since the 1980s. It has influenced generations of young people, and the hip hop lingo is understood and used by many across diverse cultural contexts. A distinctive feature of the protagonists is their conspicuous, oversized jewellery that is lavishly encrusted with diamonds, i.e. »iced up«. Music, graffiti and rap are just as important as the flashy jewellery and the matching outfits. The exhibition, linking all this through stories, extends throughout the entire building, including the Arts Association’s hall, and will even display a street scene from a hip hop film as a backdrop. Concerts, dance performances, a panel discussion and an evening with Hiphop Kitchen will be part of the richly varied accompanying programme.
