Fe. Stahlpreis 2020. Wismar, Hasselt, Lappeenranta – Three Countries, Three Cities, Three Schools

5 November 2020 through 14 February 2021 | extended until 18 July

Wismar, Hasselt, Lappeenranta - in these three cities in Germany, Belgium and Finland, three innovative training centres for jewellery design have developed in recent years. Their students had the opportunity to participate in the 6th International Steel Jewellery Competition. The result is a multifaceted exhibition that shows the broad spectrum of steel: Pieces of jewellery that are both stable and astonishingly light, hard and delicate or rigid and flowing. Even in the designs, the emergence of patina is partly taken into account. Beyond that, it is about ideas of beauty or the material and its history - from enthusiasm for mechanics to criticism of industrialisation in equal measure. »With this show, the Jewellery Museum is showing new aspects of international contemporary jewellery - created in places that are not the focus of the jewellery scene, but which are therefore a breeding ground for refreshing and new approaches to the art of jewellery,« classifies museum director Cornelie Holzach. Such an experimental approach can be given space, especially at universities.

The competition of the year 2020 was initiated by the non-profit association Kolloquium Nordrhein-Westfalen in cooperation with selected educational institutions and artists on the occasion of its 30th anniversary; it was initiated by Prof. Andrea Wippermann from Wismar. Students of the University of Wismar and its partner universities in Hasselt and Imatra were invited to participate. The four prize winners from the 26 submissions were Aniko Barka and Sandro Kesterke from Wismar University of Applied Sciences and Centaine Wekking and Jolien Hulsmans from the PXL-MAD School of Arts in Hasselt, whose works convinced the five-member jury. The jury consisted of Prof. em. Georg Dobler and Prof. em. Dorothea Prühl as well as the project manager of the Kolloquium Nordrhein-Westfalen, Jutta Vondran, the director of the German Goldsmiths’ House in Hanau, Christianne Weber-Stöber, and the director of Pforzheim’s Jewellery Museum, Cornelie Holzach. The exhibition in the Jewellery Museum shows the works of the prize winners as well as a selection of the works submitted - exhibits ranging from jewellery and tools to objects that highlight the special characteristics of steel.

As an exhibition in dialogue, Schütt - Schmuck & Edelsteine is presenting works by students of the Department of Jewellery and Gemstone Design at Trier University of Applied Sciences directly opposite the Jewellery Museum under the title »Rock Stars«.
